From a night on a private houseboat to a guided city tour, each with the start point and what is included.
Private houseboat: a day cruise or a night on board
The day cruise starts in Kochi and lasts seven hours. Three to four of them are spent on a houseboat, with lunch, tea and snacks, and private air-conditioned transfers link Cochin, Alleppey and Kumarakom. Water in the car, taxes and service charges are covered. It costs 160 USD per person, so a couple pays 320 USD. It suits families and first-time visitors who sleep in Kochi and want the backwaters in one day.
The overnight cruise lasts 21 hours and starts at Punnamada in Alappuzha. The boat is yours alone, with an air-conditioned bedroom and its own bathroom, toiletries, a living and dining area, lunch, dinner and breakfast the next day, water, and a canoe ride at Kuttamangalam. The price of 167 USD covers a group of up to two: 83.50 USD each for a couple, or 167 USD for a solo traveller. For two people that is about half the cost of the day cruise, 167 USD against 320 USD.
Kumarakom and Pathiramanal by private shikara
This six-hour day trip collects you from your hotel in Kochi or Ernakulam. It visits Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, includes a shikara ride and also stops at Pathiramanal, an island in Vembanad Lake that can only be reached by boat. Meals are not included. At 102 USD per person a couple pays 204 USD and a family of four 408 USD. Choose it if birds and open water matter more to you than houseboat comfort.
A private city tour with a shikara ride
This is the cheapest private option, from 50 USD per person: 100 USD for two, 200 USD for four. It runs for four to eight hours, with hotel pickup and return in an air-conditioned vehicle, a local guide, water, a shikara ride and entry fees. The route passes Alleppey Beach and the lighthouse. Lunch and tips are not included. The lighthouse opens 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:00 and is closed on Mondays, so a Monday suits the beach and the canals better.
Private transfers and a five-day Kerala route
The transfer is a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver for 2 to 8 hours, from 42 USD per group of up to three. Three people pay 14 USD each and two pay 21 USD each. Pickup can be at a hotel, the airport, a cruise terminal or a place you choose, and fuel, tolls and parking are included.
The five-day tour starts at 150 USD per person and links Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey with a private car and an English-speaking driver, hotel breakfast and a houseboat cruise with meals. Hotel nights are only included with the matching option, and entrance fees are extra. Our Kerala itinerary shows how the stops fit together.
