Alleppey houseboats at a glance
A houseboat in Alleppey (Alappuzha) is a tourist version of the kettuvallam, the traditional cargo boat that once carried rice and spices across the backwaters. The classic build has a wooden hull, ropes made of coconut fibre and a roof over the deck. Today's boats add bedrooms, a toilet, a living area and a kitchen. Not every boat is a rebuilt original, and not every boat is built without metal.
You can book a day cruise or an overnight stay. Both run on the backwaters from a jetty near the city. The price depends on the boat, the season and the meals. The prices below are examples for 2026, not a market range.

Day cruise or overnight stay
Two ways to use a houseboat, compared with 2026 examples.
| Day cruise | Overnight stay | |
|---|---|---|
| Time on board | 6 hours, 11:00 to 17:00 | Departure around 12:00, check-out around 09:00 |
| Meals | Lunch, tea and snacks | Lunch, snack, dinner and breakfast |
| Starting price (2026) | From INR 9,000 plus GST for up to two guests | From INR 10,000 plus GST per boat and night, one-bedroom deluxe in the low season |
| Air conditioning | Extra charge | Deluxe: bedroom 21:00 to 06:00. Premium: bedroom all day. Luxury: whole boat (labels vary by operator) |
| Best for | One free afternoon | Sleeping on the water |
For most first-time visitors, one night is the better fit, because you spend an evening and a morning on the water. Choose a day cruise if you have only one free afternoon or travel with someone who dislikes sleeping on a boat.
How the day on board works
An overnight stay is not a night of sailing.
Check-in and departure
Check-in is usually around 11:30, and the boat leaves around 12:00. Meals are part of the stay, so check which ones your price includes.
Anchoring for the night
Houseboats usually anchor between 17:00 and 17:30 and do not cruise at night. Do not expect the boat to move after dark. Ask your operator for its own times before you pay.
Check-out
Check-out is usually around 09:00 the next morning. An overnight stay includes lunch, a snack, dinner and breakfast, so you spend about a day on board.
Boarding point
Boats board at jetties near the city, for example Punnamada Jetty or the Finishing Point. Your operator names its own jetty, so confirm where yours leaves.
Licences and registration
What to ask before you pay.
Houseboats on the backwaters fall under inland vessel rules. The harbour authority at Alappuzha handles registration and annual survey checks of inland vessels, and the Inland Vessels Act of 2021 and the rules under it cover survey, registration, crew, life-saving equipment and fire safety, with amended rules from 2025. Checks on boats without proper licences were tightened in 2026, and new houseboat registrations in Alappuzha remain restricted.
The state tourism classification, revised in 2019, uses the grades Silver, Gold and Diamond Vessel. It does not replace other licences, and a classified boat is expected to show its KIV number, its name and its classification certificate. Ask to see them. A booking counter run by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) is a booking office and does not register boats, so do not treat it as the boat's licence.

What the price covers
Check the number of bedrooms, the meals, GST and air-conditioning hours. Compare the same category on the same dates. Our houseboat rates page shows how.
Deposit and children
Deposits, cancellation terms and children's rates differ between operators. Ask for them in writing before you pay.
Route changes
Operators can change the route because of weather and traffic on the water. A fixed route through lake, narrow canals and a village landing is not guaranteed for every boat.
Swimming
Some operators do not allow guests to swim in the lake from the boat. Ask about the rule before you pack for it.
When to go
The drier months are December to March.
Average rainfall at Alappuzha is lowest in January at 16.3 mm and stays under 70 mm until March. June brings 592.0 mm, and October still averages 357.4 mm, so a houseboat trip in October is not a trip in dry weather. Thunderstorms can happen in any month, and in rough weather or during the monsoon boat trips can be moved or cancelled. Read the weather and best time page, then plan the route with the backwaters guide and the shikara boat page for shorter trips.
Alleppey houseboats: frequently asked questions
What is a kettuvallam?
It is the traditional cargo boat of Kerala, built with a wooden hull and coconut fibre ropes, with a covered structure on top. It carried rice and spices. Tourist houseboats follow this design and add bedrooms, toilets, a living area and a kitchen.
Does the houseboat sail through the night?
No. Houseboats usually anchor between 17:00 and 17:30 and do not cruise at night. Ask your operator for its schedule and do not expect the boat to travel until sunrise.
How long is a day cruise?
Plan on about 6 hours, roughly 11:00 to 17:00, with lunch, tea and snacks. An example price for 2026 is INR 9,000 plus GST for up to two guests. Some boats start at 11:30, so check the times when you book.
Where do the boats leave from?
Many boats board at Punnamada Jetty or the Finishing Point. Other operators use other jetties, so confirm the exact boarding point in your booking.
Can I swim from the houseboat?
Some operators forbid swimming in the lake for guests. Rules differ by operator, so ask for yours. Life jackets and the skipper's instructions apply on board at all times.
Which houseboat category should I pick?
A common split is Deluxe with bedroom air conditioning from 21:00 to 06:00, Premium with air conditioning in the bedroom all day, and Luxury with air conditioning on the whole boat. These labels differ from operator to operator and do not match the Silver, Gold and Diamond grades of the state classification.
