Alleppey tours and boat trips compared
Most Alleppey tours happen on the water. You can take a houseboat for six hours, hire a motorboat or a shikara for an hour or more, paddle a kayak through village canals or ride the public ferry across the backwaters. The right choice depends on how long you have, how much you want to steer and what you want to see along the shore.
Routes depend on weather and traffic on the water, so no operator can promise a fixed route. Check three things for each trip: how long it lasts, where it starts and what the price covers. Prices below are in Indian rupees (INR) as of 2026 and are examples.

Times, prices and routes change with season and weather. A trip that works well in February may be moved or cancelled in the monsoon, and a starting price is not always the price for your date. Ask each operator what the price covers, where the trip starts and how long you are on the water.
For most visitors with a single day, a houseboat day cruise is the simplest tour, because meals and route are arranged for you. If you want to spend little, ride the public ferry. Choose the kayak if you prefer a narrow canal to a wide lake.
The boat types in detail
What each one involves.
Houseboat cruise
A day cruise covers lunch, tea and snacks in six hours, and air conditioning costs extra. The overnight version starts around noon and ends around 09:00 the next morning. Read the houseboat guide for registration and anchoring.
Shikara and motorboat
Shikara, motorboat and speedboat rides on Vembanad Lake are the quick option. Ask for the length of the ride and the price before you board. See the shikara boat page.
Public ferry
State boats run from point to point and are a different product from a private tour. Do not compare their fare with a houseboat price. The timetable can change, so check it at the jetty.
Canoe
Canoe and kayak trips are a separate activity from motorboat rides. Ask whether a trip is guided or paddled by yourself, and who provides life jackets.
Alleppey kayaking in Kainakary
Narrow canals in a Kuttanad village.
Kainakary is a village in Kuttanad and one of the places of interest around Alappuzha. Guided and self-steered kayak sessions of 1 to 2 hours run in the narrow canals there. There is no standard circuit, no free access to private rice fields and no fixed price, so ask the operator before you go. If you also want to understand the landscape, read the backwaters guide on Kuttanad and Kainakary.
Safety and weather
Plan with a spare day.
Wear a properly fitted life jacket, stay seated while a motorboat moves and follow the skipper's instructions. In rough sea or during the monsoon, trips can be moved or cancelled. A houseboat operator can change the route because of weather and traffic. Average rainfall at Alappuzha is lowest in January at 16.3 mm and highest in June at 592.0 mm, and October still averages 357.4 mm, so October is not a dry month. The weather page shows all twelve months.
