They describe a typical month, not the weather on the day you travel, and they do not apply to Munnar or to the rest of Kerala. If you plan to sleep on a boat, see our guide to Alleppey houseboat cruises for how overnight trips work.

Best time to visit Kerala
The best time to visit Kerala depends on what you want from the trip. For the Alappuzha coast and backwaters, the drier months from December to March suit most plans. January has the lowest average rainfall of the year, and Marari Beach is mostly dry from December to March.
- Houseboats and shikara rides: dry months mean fewer interruptions, but boat operators also add season surcharges from October to March and over Christmas and New Year. Our page on houseboat rates in Alleppey shows how prices are built.
- Beach days: the sea can have deep water and strong currents, especially during and after the monsoon. There is no blanket all-clear for swimming, so follow local advice on the day. More on the Alleppey Beach page.
- Birds: at Kumarakom, local birds are best seen from June to August and migratory birds from November to February. Bird seasons do not follow the dry season, so plan this trip separately. See Kumarakom.
Monsoon in Alleppey
The southwest monsoon normally reaches Kerala around 1 June, but the exact start differs every year. In Alappuzha the rain is heaviest in June and July, with 592.0 mm and 485.9 mm on average, and it stays heavy through September.
Rough water and heavy rain can change boat plans. Motorboat trips can be moved or cancelled in rough conditions, and houseboat operators keep the right to change a route because of weather or traffic on the water. Keep a spare day in your plan if you travel in the wet months.
Not everything stops. The Nehru Trophy snake boat race takes place in the middle of the rainy season; in 2026 it was held on 22 August on Punnamada Lake. Read more on the Nehru Trophy page.

October and November: do not count on dry weather
October brings 357.4 mm of rain on average, more than August. It is a transition month, not a dry one. November is easier at 175.8 mm, and December drops to 48.2 mm. If your dates fall in October, treat the weather as unsettled and keep your plans flexible.
Outside the main monsoon months, thunderstorms and squalls are still possible across Kerala. That is a regional pattern, not a ban on swimming at a particular beach or on boat rides, so check the local situation with your operator before you go.
Planning to combine the coast with the hills? These figures describe Alappuzha only. Munnar and other inland stops have their own conditions, which is worth remembering for a Kerala itinerary with Alleppey.
