Vembanad Lake at a glance
Vembanad is the largest lake in Kerala. It is part of the wider backwater system around Alleppey, a network of canals, rivers and lakes, so it is one piece of the backwaters and not their only name. Houseboats, public ferries and tour boats all use the lake.
Most visitors meet the lake on a boat. A houseboat cruise from Alleppey is the classic way, while the public ferry and a trip to Pathiramanal Island are shorter options.

Pathiramanal Island
A small island in the lake that you can only reach by boat.
Where it is
Pathiramanal lies in Vembanad Lake between Thanneermukkom and Kumarakom. There is no road or footpath from the mainland, so you need a boat.
Travel time
From Alappuzha the trip takes about 1.5 hours by motorboat or about 30 minutes by speedboat. These are two different boat types, and neither comes with a fixed timetable or price.
Birds
The island is a habitat for resident and migratory birds. No species or sighting is guaranteed, so treat the birds as a bonus.
Landing
A stop at the island is not guaranteed, and landing can depend on the weather. Ask the boat operator about landing, fees and hours before you pay.

Public backwater ferries
State-run boats link points on the water as an everyday alternative to a hired boat. The Alappuzha to Kottayam boat leaves from the State Water Transport Department (SWTD) jetty opposite the KSRTC bus station and takes about 2 hours.
Departures from Alappuzha are spread between roughly 07:15 and 17:15. Do not assume a boat runs on every day or in every weather. Check the current timetable and ask for the fare at the jetty before you go.
A public ferry is a transport service. It is not the same thing as a houseboat, a shikara or a tourist cruise, and the fares differ between them.

Ways to see the lake compared
Times are approximate and depend on the boat and the weather.
| Option | Time | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Public ferry, Alappuzha to Kottayam | About 2 hours | Getting from A to B on the water |
| Motorboat to Pathiramanal | About 1.5 hours from Alappuzha | A slower trip to the island |
| Speedboat to Pathiramanal | About 30 minutes from Alappuzha | A short trip to the island |
| Houseboat | Day cruise or overnight | Time on the water with meals on board |
For most first-time visitors, a houseboat or a boat to Pathiramanal gives you a view of the open lake. If you only need to cross to Kottayam, take the public ferry.
Houseboats and the lake
A night on a houseboat does not mean cruising all night. Houseboats usually anchor between 17:00 and 17:30 and do not cruise after dark. Routes can change with weather and traffic on the water, so a plan to reach a certain stretch of the lake may shift on the day.
- Some operators do not allow guests to swim in the lake. Follow your boat's rules.
- On rough water or in heavy rain, trips can be moved or cancelled.
- Wear a life jacket when you are given one and stay seated while the boat is moving.
Read the Kumarakom guide for the bird sanctuary on the lake, and the backwaters guide for the canals and Kuttanad.
