Alleppey Beach at a glance

Alleppey Beach lies on the coast of Alappuzha, the town most visitors call Alleppey. Its two landmarks are the old pier, which reaches out into the surf, and the lighthouse in town. You can see both in one morning or afternoon.

The beach is a place to walk, watch the sea and see the town's maritime past. It pairs well with a backwater day, for example on a Alleppey houseboat or a shorter boat trip, with the seafront for the hours before or after.

The old pier

The pier is about 387 m long. It belongs to the days when Alleppey was a working port, and the port has not handled traffic since 1989. Today it is a landmark to look at from the sand, with weathered posts standing in the waves.

The structure is old and in poor condition. Treat it as scenery rather than a promenade, and do not plan on walking out over the water. How the sky looks at the end of the day depends on cloud and the season, and no sunset is guaranteed.

Swimming and safety at Alleppey Beach

Treat the sea here with respect. The water gets deep quickly, and currents can be strong, especially during and after the monsoon. There is no guarantee that a lifeguard is on duty at any hour, so do not count on one.

  • Keep children within arm's reach and out of deep water.
  • Do not swim alone, and stay out of the surf when waves are rough.
  • Follow any flags, signs or instructions from local staff.
  • Do not assume that parking, toilets or snack stalls are open at every hour. Bring water.

Best time to visit the beach

Station averages for Alappuzha, 1991 to 2020. They show typical months, not a forecast for your dates.

PeriodTypical rainWhat it means at the beach
December to March16 to 63 mm a monthThe drier part of the year and the easiest time for a seafront walk
April and May132 mm in April, 274 mm in MayHot and getting wetter, with showers more likely
June to September296 to 592 mm a monthMonsoon months with heavy rain and rough surf
October and November357 mm in October, 176 mm in NovemberOctober is still wet, so do not count on dry weather

For most visitors, a morning between December and March is the simplest choice. In any month, check the day's weather before you travel, because thunderstorms and squalls can arrive outside the main monsoon. See the full month-by-month picture on the Alleppey weather page.
